Essential business coaching glossary

These are the terms every business owner and executive should know before starting a coaching engagement. Understanding the language helps you ask better questions and get more from every session.

Accountability partnership

A structured relationship where your coach holds you responsible for the commitments you make between sessions. Unlike casual check-ins, accountability partnerships use specific milestones, deadlines, and consequence frameworks to ensure follow-through. This is one of the most powerful mechanisms in business coaching because it bridges the gap between intention and execution.

Blind spot analysis

A diagnostic technique where a coach identifies patterns, assumptions, or behaviours that the client cannot see on their own. Every leader has blind spots — areas where their expertise becomes a limitation. Through structured questioning and observation, a skilled business coach surfaces these hidden obstacles so they can be addressed directly.

Capacity ceiling

The invisible upper limit on what a business can produce with its current resources, systems, and leadership habits. Coaching helps you identify whether your ceiling is operational, strategic, or personal — and which interventions will raise it most effectively. Many entrepreneurs hit a capacity ceiling around the 15-employee mark without realizing the constraint is their own decision-making speed.

Decision fatigue mapping

A coaching exercise that catalogues every decision you make in a typical week, then categorizes each one by impact and reversibility. The goal is to delegate or systematize low-impact decisions so your mental energy is reserved for the choices that actually move the business forward. Leaders who complete this exercise typically reclaim six to ten hours of productive focus per week.

Growth plateau

A period where revenue, team development, or market position stalls despite continued effort. Plateaus are not failures — they are signals that the strategies which brought you here will not take you further. Business coaching during a plateau focuses on identifying which lever (pricing, positioning, talent, operations, or leadership) is the binding constraint.

Inner board of directors

A concept where you mentally assemble a group of trusted advisors — real or aspirational — whose perspectives you consult before major decisions. Your coach helps you build and refine this internal advisory board, ensuring it represents diverse viewpoints and challenges your default thinking patterns.

Leverage audit

A comprehensive review of where your time, money, and attention generate the highest return. Most business owners discover that roughly twenty percent of their activities produce eighty percent of their results — but they spend less than thirty percent of their time on those high-leverage activities. A leverage audit realigns your calendar with your actual priorities.

Transformation contract

A mutual agreement between coach and client that defines the scope, timeline, success metrics, and boundaries of the coaching engagement. Unlike a legal contract, this is a working document that evolves as your goals sharpen. It ensures both parties are aligned on what success looks like and prevents scope drift that can dilute the impact of coaching.

Embedded proof

"The glossary alone gave me more clarity than three months of googling. When I finally started coaching, I knew exactly what to ask for."

— Raj Patel, CTO at a Montréal fintech startup

Framework atlas

We use a library of proven frameworks depending on what challenge you bring. Here are five we return to most often, along with when each one applies.

The constraint compass

When your business feels stuck but you cannot pinpoint why, the constraint compass helps you systematically test four quadrants: market demand, operational capacity, financial structure, and leadership bandwidth. We work through each quadrant in a single intensive session, scoring each on a scale that reveals which constraint is binding. Most clients discover the real bottleneck is not where they assumed — and that insight alone is worth the engagement.

The delegation ladder

Delegation is not binary. The ladder has five rungs: inform, consult, agree, advise, and empower. Each rung represents a different level of autonomy you grant to a team member. We map every recurring task in your week to the appropriate rung, then build a transition plan that moves tasks up the ladder over time. This framework is especially useful for founders who intellectually understand they need to delegate but emotionally resist letting go.

Revenue architecture mapping

Rather than chasing more sales, this framework examines how your revenue is structured. We look at concentration risk (how much depends on your top three clients), margin distribution across service lines, and the ratio of recurring to project-based income. The output is a visual architecture diagram that shows exactly where your revenue is fragile and where it is resilient. From there, we design a twelve-month plan to strengthen the weak points.

The energy audit

Not all work hours are created equal. The energy audit tracks not just how you spend your time, but how each activity affects your mental and physical energy. Over two weeks, you log activities alongside an energy score. The resulting heat map reveals which tasks drain you and which ones fuel you. We then restructure your week so high-energy periods align with high-impact work, and low-energy periods are reserved for routine tasks.

Stakeholder alignment grid

When you have partners, investors, or a leadership team, misalignment is the silent killer of progress. This grid maps each stakeholder against four dimensions: vision clarity, risk tolerance, time horizon, and commitment level. Gaps between stakeholders become visible immediately, and we design conversations to close those gaps before they become conflicts. This framework has prevented more partnership breakdowns than any other tool in our library.

Readiness check

Not everyone is ready for coaching — and that is perfectly fine. Answer these five questions honestly to see where you stand. This is not a sales funnel; it is a genuine self-assessment.

Can you commit to a weekly ninety-minute session for at least three months?
Are you willing to be challenged on decisions you have already made?
Do you have a specific business challenge you want to solve, or are you looking for general growth?
Have you invested in professional development before (courses, mentors, advisors)?
What is your relationship with feedback?

"The readiness check was surprisingly revealing. I thought I was ready, but realized I needed to sort out my partnership dynamics first. They pointed me to the stakeholder alignment grid and we resolved a two-year tension in four sessions."

Coaching pathways

We do not offer cookie-cutter packages. Instead, we match you to a pathway based on where you are and where you want to go. Each pathway has a different rhythm, depth, and duration.

For established leaders who want sustained growth. Bi-weekly sessions over six months with accountability check-ins between meetings. We work through multiple frameworks, build new leadership habits, and measure progress against the metrics that matter to your business.

Common questions from first-time clients

How is business coaching different from consulting?

A consultant tells you what to do. A coach helps you figure out what to do — and more importantly, helps you build the capacity to make those decisions independently in the future. We do not write your strategy for you; we develop your ability to create and execute strategy on your own.

What happens in a typical session?

Sessions are ninety minutes. The first fifteen minutes review progress on commitments from the previous session. The core sixty minutes focus on the current challenge or framework. The final fifteen minutes establish specific actions and deadlines for the next period. Every session produces a written summary you can reference later.

Do you work with businesses outside Montréal?

Yes. While our office is in Montréal, we work with clients across Canada and internationally via video sessions. The coaching process works equally well in person or remotely — what matters is consistency and commitment, not geography.

How do I know if coaching is working?

We establish measurable success criteria at the start of every engagement. These might include revenue targets, team satisfaction scores, decision-making speed, or personal wellbeing metrics. We review progress against these criteria monthly and adjust the approach if something is not tracking.

What if I realize coaching is not for me mid-engagement?

We build an exit clause into every transformation contract. If after the first three sessions you feel the fit is wrong, we part ways with no further obligation. Coaching only works when both parties are genuinely invested, and we would rather end an engagement early than continue one that is not producing results.
